Unum Reduces Future Claim Reserves

Unum, one of the largest disability insurance companies, has increased its profits by reducing an account that holds reserves against future claims. According to Barron’s, by slashing these reserves, Unum was able to add $292 million to its $1.1 billion pre-tax earnings for 2007.  Investors are cautioned against potentially illusory earnings growth and the possibility of future earnings charges, as has occurred in the past.
