Unum Increases Profits While Workers “Gut it Out”

In an interview, Unum CEO Thomas Watjen remarked that the recession has led to fewer disability claims being filed, because workers are increasingly insecure about their position at work and are more likely to “gut it out” rather than file a claim. Workers are more likely to put up with so-called “more discretionary” conditions such as lower back pain or nervous conditions. Meanwhile, Unum isn’t gutting anything out as it reports its fifth straight increase in quarterly profits.
